TOP OF THE AGENDA | Surprise victory for left in Brazil election |
|
| | Lula's win bucks a wider trend in Latin America, where voters have punished incumbents and turned to the right. Credit: Reuters | Supporters of veteran President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva were celebrating in the streets of São Paulo after the 80-year-old took just under 52% of the votes in the second round of a bitterly fought election. Many of them did not think a victory was possible, as this is the first time since Brazil's return to democracy in 1988 that a candidate overturned a first-round loss. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro - who was sentenced for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election - had won the first round of voting. He described the result as "inexplicable" and called for its annulment. Meanwhile, Lula thanked voters who "went to the streets to defend Brazilian democracy". |
