TOP OF THE AGENDA | Pressure increases on French government after weekend of violence |
|
| | 'Entire sections' of Paris, Lyon and Marseille were left unprotected this weekend, the cities' mayors have said. Credit: Reuters | France's interior minister has admitted police "lost control" in some cities over the weekend after rioting saw businesses ransacked and buildings burned. More than half a million people took to the streets on Saturday, protesting over a broad range of concerns. While the majority of demonstrators were peaceful, disorder broke out in "some of the worst scenes of public disorder in modern French history", our Europe editor Katya Adler writes. The riots took place against the backdrop of a parliament that is "paralysed" and a country suffering "financial woes". People on the streets told Katya that "while they worry about the future", politicians seem "to be passionately focused on finger-pointing; blaming one another for the volatility". |

| BEYOND THE HEADLINES | Inside the shadowy world of anti-Putin sabotage from within Russia |
|
| | | The two men believe Putin's political future depends on the war's outcome. | Two Russian men secretly working for Ukraine's military intelligence services (GUR) in a bid to help Kyiv win the war and to bring down President Vladimir Putin have given rare accounts of their work. Video shows one man apparently carrying out reconaissance missions and hiding exposives near a Russian military airfield, while the other claims to have provided intelligence on a general who was killed in a car bombing in Moscow last year. The GUR confirmed the pair work for it, but with one of the men operating inside Russia, even his handler admitted he was "not sure" if he could be trusted. |

| And finally... in space | An ambitious mission is set to blast off later, making a 10-month voyage to Mars' moon Phobos with the aim of bringing a sample of it back. It's hoped the venture could shed new light on how the Red Planet's two moons were formed. But it will be difficult - these are the factors that could cause the mission to fail. | |
