The White House prepared for months for Joe Biden to get Covid-19. Its response, now that he has it, is clearly calculated to distinguish Biden from the first US President to get the virus — Donald Trump. There was no late-night tweet breaking the news. And if Biden were to take a turn for the worse, it’s highly unlikely he would take a spin past cheering supporters in his presidential SUV outside the hospital, then rip off his mask theatrically upon return to the White House. The current administration informed Americans about Biden's positive test soon after it happened, put White House coronavirus coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha on camera to talk about it, and promised daily updates about Biden's heath. The commander-in-chief, who is double vaccinated and double boosted, appears to be in a much better spot than his predecessor; vaccine availability was still a few months in the future when Trump got sick and had to be airlifted to the presidential medical unit.
The White House says Biden is taking the anti-viral drug Paxlovid used to treat mild to moderate cases of the disease. His doctors say he had mild symptoms, including a runny nose and an occasional dry cough. Biden did cancel a trip to Pennsylvania, but posted a short video on Twitter on Thursday (above) telling everyone he felt fine.
Still, at the age of 79, the President is at a higher risk of complications from Covid-19. He’ll be carefully watched as he isolates inside the White House residence over the weekend. His diagnosis follows recent trips to Europe and the Middle East, and he’s also been mingling with numerous US lawmakers, supporters and other officials.
His case is yet another sign that the virus is still everywhere in the United States, though recent variants of the disease have caused fewer hospitalizations and deaths. The White House hopes that it will also convince more Americans to get their shots up to date, at a time when much of the US is in the viral red zone.
