Mitsotakis and Macron in Cyprus
In response to the drone strikes against the sovereign British airbase RAF Akrotiri on Cyprus, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and French President Emmanuel Macron visited the island where they met with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides for a tripartite meeting on the island. “When somebody attacks Cyprus, they attack the whole of Europe”, said Macron, offering his “full solidarity” with the island, while Mitsotakis noted that the meeting between the three leaders “sends a joint, clear, loud and decisive message of unity and solidarity”. The three discussed regional developments stemming from the conflict in Iran, and urged that a large-scale and prolonged operation in Lebanon should be avoided. However, it is worth noting that according to sources available to Kathimerini, during the meeting Greece also signalled to France that it would be against an expansion of the “Aspides” mission (the European Union naval mission with Greek participation to protect freedom of navigation in the Red Sea) to cover the Straits of Hormuz. “There is currently no operation in Hormuz, and we have no intention to send a ship there”, stated government sources.
