NTI (Nuclear Threat Initiative) Statement on Vladimir Putin’s Nuclear Threats

NTI Statement on Vladimir Putin’s Nuclear Threats

This week, Russian President Vladimir Putin made his clearest threat yet to use nuclear weapons in his war on Ukraine. NTI responded in a statement calling on world leaders to make it clear they will hold Putin accountable for his actions and to engage in urgent efforts to end the war. “Global leaders must waste no time and spare no effort in meeting this challenge with dedicated and aggressive diplomacy,” the statement says. “The nightmare scenario of nuclear weapons use in the Ukraine conflict is relentlessly coming into sharper focus and standing on the sidelines is becoming an act of complicity.”

Putin’s willingness to flout global norms and endanger the citizens of Ukraine and its neighbors, including Russia, has not been limited to his verbal statements as evidenced by ongoing concerns about conditions at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. NTI said leaders, including in China and India, “must make clear to Putin directly and in no uncertain terms that any use of nuclear weapons in this conflict is unacceptable and would have catastrophic consequences for Putin and for Russia—and for other parts of the world as well.” Read the statement here.
