IRTUAL POLICY FORUM
TURKEY’S PRESIDENTIAL RUNOFF
What to Expect May 28 and After
Humeyra Pamuk, Emre Peker, and Elcin Poyrazlar

THURSDAY, MAY 25, 2023
12:30 PM to 1:30 PM ET

In the May 14 Turkish elections, the bloc led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan outperformed expectations by earning 49.5 percent of the vote, yielding a parliamentary majority but falling just short of delivering an outright presidential victory. This gives challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who earned nearly 45 percent, another shot at vanquishing the longtime Turkish leader in a runoff on May 28. The outcome will hold major implications for Turkey’s domestic politics and foreign policy, including its ties with the United States and Europe.

To discuss these and other issues before the vote, The Washington Institute is pleased to announce a virtual Policy Forum with Humeyra Pamuk, Emre Peker, and Elcin Poyrazlar. The event will be moderated by Beyer Family Fellow Soner Cagaptay, who directs the Institute’s Turkish Research Program.

Humeyra Pamuk is a senior foreign policy correspondent for Reuters, covering the U.S. Department of State. During her two decades with the agency, she has reported from fifty countries and been posted in Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Britain.

Emre Peker is the director for Europe at the Eurasia Group consultancy. Previously, he covered Turkey, NATO, and related issues for the Wall Street Journal, contributing to work by the team that produced Pulitzer Prize–nominated stories on the 2016 coup attempt.

Elcin Poyrazlar is a political columnist for Cumhuriyet, Turkey’s oldest newspaper, who has also written for the Guardian, Financial Times, and Huffington Post, among other international media. She has reported extensively on the 2023 Turkish elections for Politico.
