Former Turkish ambassador Feridun Sinirlioglu elected OSCE Secretary-General On December 6, 2024, former Turkish Ambassador Feridun Sinirlioglu was unanimously elected as the new SecretaryGeneral of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) during the 31st OSCE Ministerial Council in Malta.

Sinirlioglu, the first Turkish diplomat to assume this role in the organization’s 50-year history, fills a position vacant since September. His three-year term received approval from all 57 member states, including Türkiye’s historical rivals Greece, the Greek Cypriot administration, and Armenia, reflecting a consensus amid regional tensions.

The OSCE, established during the Cold War to facilitate East-West dialogue, has faced decision-making challenges, particularly following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Sinirlioglu’s leadership is anticipated to focus on preserving European security foundations, maintaining global stability, and enhancing the OSCE’s effectiveness. Türkiye’s recent diplomatic efforts to mend ties with Greece and Armenia underscore its commitment to regional cooperation, aligning with Sinirlioglu’s forthcoming agenda.
