Mainland China has retaliated with sanctions against two US bodies and their senior executives who hosted Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen during her stay in the United States, with Beijing claiming the Americans provided platforms and facilities for “Taiwan independence”.

Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan’s representative in the United States, was also sanctioned for her role in Tsai’s meeting with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

The military deployment around Taiwan tightened on Thursday, with both China and the United States sending advanced warships near the island while Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California.

The Taiwanese defence ministry said a People’s Liberation Army fleet led by the Shandong aircraft carrier passed through the Bashi Channel – which runs between the island and the Philippines – before reaching waters southeast of Taiwan. The carrier was heading to its first manoeuvres in the western Pacific.

Also on Thursday, Taiwanese Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng said the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier was positioned some 400 nautical miles (740.8km) off eastern Taiwan.

America’s top general stressed on Thursday that a war with China was “not inevitable”, but predicted that any attempts by the Asian giant to give lethal aid to Russia in its war with Ukraine “will broaden the conflict beyond the region”.

US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Mark Milley made the remarks during his testimony before the US House Appropriations Committee regarding a 2024 budget for the Pentagon that he described as driven by a strategy to “deter” war. The formal request to Congress totalled US$842 billion, up 3.2 per cent from 2023.

“War with Russia or China is neither inevitable nor imminent,” Milley said, describing Beijing’s actions as “moving it down the path towards confrontation and potential conflict with its neighbours and possibly the United States”.
