US, Ukrainian and European Officials Meet to Discuss Trump’s Peace Plan

A “tremendous amount of progress” in talks about ending the war in Ukraine has been made on the “very good” first day of the meeting between US, Ukrainian and European officials in Geneva, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Speaking to reporters late on Sunday, Rubio said there was still some work to be done but refused to comment which were the open issues.
Ukrainian, US and European officials were underway meeting in Geneva to discuss a 28-point draft plan presented by the US to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
US President Trump had reportedly given Ukrainian President Zelenskiy until Thursday, November 27, to respond to the controversial plan, which calls on Ukraine to cede territory, accept limits on its military and renounce ambitions to join NATO.
Both Ukraine and its allies voiced alarm over the plan on Saturday, which led to US President Trump answering to journalists that the proposal is not Washington’s “final offer” to Ukraine.
Washington’s Ukraine peace plan a “wishlist of the Russians”
It was not only Ukraine and its allies who raised eyebrows at President Trump’s proposed 28-point peace plan, outlining the major concessions it contains to the aggressor Russia.
Senator Angus King said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had told senators the plan was not the administration’s position, but “essentially the wishlist of the Russians,” Reuters reports.
Rubio denied the allegations before heading to Geneva, insisting on X that Washington had authored the plan.
“It is offered as a strong framework for ongoing negotiations,” Rubio said of the proposal. “It is based on input from the Russian side. But it is also based on previous and ongoing input from Ukraine.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the goal of Sunday’s meeting was to craft a plan acceptable to Ukraine which could be used in a negotiation with Russia, and “that would likely take time.”
Trump accuses Ukraine of ingratitude for peace talks efforts
In an angry post on his account on his social media platform, Truth Social, US President Trump blamed the previous US administration and the Ukrainian leadership for the current situation, while he also fired at the European Union.
“Ukraine “leadership” has expressed zero gratitude for our efforts, and Europe continues to buy oil from Russia,” Trump wrote of the war that he “inherited.”
Repeating his permanent claim about the 2020 Presidential Election having been “rigged and stolen,” the US President opined that if he had remained in office, “Putin would have never attacked.”
In response to Trump’s comments of ingratitude, Ukraine’s top security official, Rustem Umerov, wrote on Telegram: “We appreciate our American partners working closely with us to understand our concerns to reach this critical point and we expect to make more progress today.”
Later on Sunday, the Ukrainian President also stated that Ukraine is “thankful to the United States, to every American heart and particularly to President Trump for the help which, starting with Javelin (missiles), saves Ukrainian lives,” and expressed additional thanks to Europe and the G7 and G20 groups.
With regards to the ongoing peace talks, Zelenskyi said that “everything must work out the right way so that this war is truly ended and so that it does not happen again.”
