Trump-Erdoğan Meeting Information Note
The meeting between President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and U.S. President Donald Trump, held at the White House on September 25, 2025, lasted approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. The discussions covered the Gaza crisis, the Russia-Ukraine war, the purchase of F-35 and F-16 fighter jets, U.S. CAATSA sanctions on Turkey, developments in Syria, peace initiatives in the Middle East, and trade relations.
Both sides described the meeting as highly productive and successful. Trump made positive remarks about Turkey’s return to the F-35 program and noted that the lifting of sanctions imposed due to the S-400 purchase was also on the agenda. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized that the meeting proceeded with a perspective of cooperation aligned with the interests of both countries. Post-meeting commentary indicated that the talks laid the groundwork for new steps in both military and diplomatic fields and created a positive atmosphere in Turkey-U.S. relations.
U.S. Ambassador to Ankara Tom Barrack, in his assessment of the meeting, described the Oval Office talks as “historic.” Stressing the need to support the territorial integrity of Syria, Barrack underlined that governance models based on ethnicity or sectarianism had failed, with Lebanon and Iraq being clear examples. Regarding Gaza, he said that “senseless deaths must stop,” drawing attention to the urgency of ending the conflict.
Among the outcomes of the meeting, three notable developments stood out. First, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced the signing of an agreement with the U.S. inthe field of nuclear energy, which was said to deepen the partnership between the two countries.
Second, a large-scale Boeing aircraft sales agreement was concluded, considered a step that would strengthen defense and trade relations. Third, messages were conveyed suggesting that progress could be made on Turkey’s reintegration into the F-35 program and the lifting of sanctions.
The U.S. media highlighted that, despite having different perspectives on Gaza, the two leaders projected an image of harmony in front of the cameras. Commentaries suggested that Trumpviewed Erdoğan as an “important mediator” in the contexts of the Gaza and Ukraine wars. All these developments indicated the emergence of new cooperation opportunities in both economic and defense areas and pointed to the possibility of Turkey-U.S. relations moving to a closer and more strategic dimension.
