Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met today with PRC Director of the CCP Central Foreign Affairs Commission and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the margins of the 79th UN General Assembly in New York City. The two sides held candid, substantive, and productive discussions on a range of bilateral, regional, and global issues. They emphasized the need to maintain open lines of communication.
Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of using diplomacy to responsibly manage competition, to candidly discuss areas of difference, and to make progress on areas of cooperation that matter to the American people and the world. They discussed implementation of the 2023 Woodside Summit commitments, including counternarcotics cooperation to disrupt the flow of synthetic drugs and precursor chemicals into the United States, military-to-military communication, and talks on artificial intelligence risk and safety.
Secretary Blinken underscored the United States’ continued concern with PRC support for Russia’s defense industrial base and war of aggression against Ukraine and made clear the need for the PRC to address Russia’s threat to transatlantic security. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and raised concerns about the PRC’s dangerous and destabilizing actions in the South China Sea.
Secretary Blinken reiterated that it remains a top priority to resolve the cases of American citizens who are detained or subject to exit bans in China. He also raised human rights concerns, including with respect to Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong. The Secretary discussed concerns related to technology; U.S. policy remains designed to prevent advanced U.S. technologies from being used to undermine our national security. Both sides agreed to maintain contact, including on regional and global issues.
