The shooter who opened fire late Tuesday at a Walmart in the Tidewater area of Virginia was an employee of the store, Chesapeake police said at a news conference Wednesday. Police and Walmart later identified the suspect as 31-year-old Andre Bing. He was a manager with the overnight team who joined the company in 2010, the company said in a statement.

Six victims died in the attack, along with the shooter. At least six others were wounded and transported to local hospitals, authorities said. One of those injured is in critical condition. Police said the gunman used a pistol in the rampage and apparently died of a “self-inflicted gunshot wound.” They did not immediately name him pending notification of next of kin.

It remains unclear how many people were in the store at the time of the incident, which came less than two days before Thanksgiving. Walmart said on Twitter early Wednesday that it was working closely with law enforcement and “focused on supporting our associates.” The store will remain closed as the investigation continues, police said.

Here’s what else to know:

  • The gunman walked into a break room and opened fire on his colleagues, a Walmart employee who survived the shooting told The Washington Post. Walmart and police later identified the suspect as overnight team manager Andre Bing.
  • The Washington Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI Norfolk office said it would assist Chesapeake police with the investigation.
  • Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) ordered all U.S. and commonwealth flags in local, state and federal buildings to be flown at half-staff in honor of victims.
