The examination of the Speaker's proposal for prime minister was interpreted into sign language. The webcast can be viewed on demand via the Riksdag webcast service.
What happens now?
Since the proposal for prime minister has been approved by the Riksdag, the Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson must announce, as soon as possible, the names of the ministers that will be included in the government. The new government then takes office at a special meeting known as a Council of State at the Royal Palace, with the head of state, that is, the King, presiding as chair. The Speaker also participates in the Council of State.
Background
On Wednesday 10 November, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (Social Democratic Party) formally requested to resign as Prime Minister and the Speaker granted his request. On 24 November, the Riksdag approved the Speaker's proposal to appoint Magdalena Andersson (Social Democratic Party) as Prime Minister. Magdalena Andersson requested to be discharged from office the same day, and her request was granted by the Speaker. On 25 November, the Speaker once again proposed that the Riksdag appoint Magdalena Andersson as Prime Minister.
The Speaker has the assignment of preparing a proposal for a new prime minister for the Riksdag to take a stand on. The assignment includes interview rounds with representatives of all the parties in the Riksdag and consultations with the Deputy Speakers. The Speaker also keeps the head of state informed of the situation regarding the assignment of presenting a proposal for a new prime minister. Until a new government has taken office in connection with a Council of State, Stefan Löfven (Social Democratic Party) is Prime Minister in a caretaker government, consisting of representatives of the Social Democratic Party and the Green Party.
