Residential areas in Israel take ‘direct hit’ after series of Iranian drone and missile attacks
00:31
What's happening now
• Fresh blast rock Tehran: More explosions hit the Iranian capital as the Iran-Israel conflict intensified following Israeli strikes on energy and defense infrastructure. Israel’s military said “we don’t stop striking for one moment.”
• Israeli toll mounts: At least 13 people are confirmed dead in Israel in the hostilities. Visiting the scene of a strike which killed four people, Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu said “think what would happen if Iran had atomic weapons.” A stated goal of the Israeli operation is to stop Iran developing a nuclear bomb.
• Iranians flee: Some Tehran residents have been escaping north to safer rural areas while others have been stockpiling essentials. The metro system is opening around the clock to allow people to shelter. Scores of people have been reported killed but no official figure has been given.
• No end in sight: Israel’s operation against Iran is expected to take “weeks, not days” and is moving forward with implicit US approval, according to White House and Israeli officials. US President Donald Trump said his country “had nothing to do with” the Israeli attacks overnight but warned Iran not to hit US targets.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has again warned of the danger of Tehran having nuclear weapons as he visited the impact site of an Iranian missile strike that killed at least four people.
“We are here because we are in an existential campaign, which is clear today to all citizens of Israel. Think of what could happen if Iran had atomic weapons to drop on Israeli cities. Think of what could happen if Iran had 20,000 such missiles,” Netanyahu said in a video message from the city of Bat Yam. A stated goal of the Israeli operation is to stop Iran developing a nuclear bomb.
“Iran will pay a very heavy price for deliberately murdering our citizens, women and children. We will also achieve our objectives and we will also strike them forcefully. They will feel the might of our arm,” he added.
The Israeli leader urged citizens to adhere to home front command instructions when issued to shelter inside, saying, “It will save your lives.”
The prime minister’s visit comes after Israeli President Isaac Herzog attended the impact site to meet emergency responders and residents.

Fresh blasts rock Tehran as Israeli attacks continue
From CNN's Sophie Tanno
Residents in the capital Tehran told CNN they felt fresh explosions shake the city on Sunday afternoon.
State media reported blasts in several residential areas in the west of the city and showed plumes of smoke rising. One video showed a car on fire and the street thick with dust.
The full extent of the damage or if there are casualties is unclear.
The Israeli military was giving a briefing as reports emerged, with a spokesperson saying further strikes were underway.
“We don’t stop striking for one moment,” Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Effie Defrin said. “At this time, too, we continue to strike dozens of various additional targets in Tehran.”

Israel struck the “nuclear command center of the Iranian regime” in overnight strikes on 80 targets across Iran Saturday, a military spokesperson said, adding: “We are not pausing for a moment.”
The new round of strikes on Iran hit “research and development sites used for the production of raw materials and laboratories for the development of nuclear weapons,” Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief Spokesperson Effie Defrin said at a Sunday briefing.
“We also struck fuel depots near Tehran that support Iranian military infrastructure,” he said.
Overall, Israel has struck 250 targets in Iran.
“Even at this hour, we are continuing to strike dozens more targets in Tehran,” Defrin said.
“We are deepening the damage to the nuclear program and to military capabilities, in order to disrupt and reduce the threat to the Israeli home front.”

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog visited the site of a deadly Iranian missile strike in Bat Yam, Central Israel, on Sunday.
A residential building was directly struck at around 2.30 a.m. local time Sunday, killing at least four people including a 10-year-old boy.
Dozens were injured, with rescue forces continuing to search for missing people, according to Israel’s Government Press Office.
“Civilians of all ages, all backgrounds- Jews and Muslims, young and old, veteran Israelis and new immigrants, Holocaust survivors and toddlers, were unfortunately, and so sadly, killed by a horrendous Iranian attack against our cities,” Herzog said at the scene, while meeting residents and rescue workers.
The president added that Israel’s aim is to “change the reality in the Middle East,” and he called on the leaders of the G7 countries convening in Canada to stand behind Israel, to move the region towards “peace … dialogue… coexistence and rapprochement.”

Gulf official criticizes "reckless" Israeli strike on South Pars gas field
From CNN’s Becky Anderson, Alireza Hajihosseini and Rob Picheta
An official from a Gulf country has criticized as “reckless” an Israeli strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field, the largest such facility in the world that Iran shares with Qatar.
“While significant US investments are only on the Qatari side of the world’s largest gas field, this escalation is a threat to these investments,” the official briefed on the strike told CNN on Sunday.
The strike took place around 200 kilometers from the Qatari facilities, the official said.
“This is very reckless behavior that threatens global energy security, considering the Qatari field is a vital energy source for the US, Europe and the world,” they added. “This strike puts the interests of the United States and those of regional allies like Qatar and others at risk.”

Tehran to open metro stations for use as bomb shelters, government says
From CNN’s Nadeen Ebrahim
Iran’s capital Tehran will open its metro stations around the clock from Sunday night for people to use as shelters, a government spokesperson announced on Iranian state television.
Meanwhile, Tehran’s council chief said that as the city lacks bomb shelters, civilians must use tunnels and basements.
“Unfortunately, we in Tehran and in our other cities do not have shelters,” Mehdi Chamran told reporters Sunday. “We must work on having shelters now; we can use the plans we had before.”
Chamran said that casualty figures in Israel are lower as that country has bomb shelters and holds regular drills in readiness for incoming attacks.
“In Tehran there weren’t any shelters, people went into basements,” he said, adding that the metro can be used as a shelter “in extreme crisis” but that “we would need to shut the system down.”
“We could prepare underground parking lots as well, similar to when Saddam bombed us,” Chamran said, referring to former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and the war of the 1980s.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned in a video address Saturday that Israel will “strike every site and every target of the Ayatollah’s regime.” Iran has threatened to intensify its attacks if Israel continues hostilities.

The majority of those killed or injured in Israeli strikes on Iran are women and children, the country’s health minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarghand was quoted on state media as saying.
No official tally has been given for the number of deaths from three days of conflict with Israel, but on Friday Iran’s UN envoy said at least 78 people had been killed in the initial wave of strikes.
The following day, state media reported at least 60 people were killed when a missile strike hit a residential block.

A CNN team on the ground witnessed the destruction caused in a central Israeli town after it came under fire from Iran in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A barrage of Iranian missiles struck Bat Yam at around 2.30 a.m. local time. CNN’s Nic Robertson witnessed the aftermath of the attack, and saw how buildings had been turned to rubble.
The Iranian strikes appeared to have hit a residential block, with children’s toys seen lying in the ruins of the building.
Speaking to CNN live on air, Dean Elsdunne, an international spokesperson for the Israel Police, said that extensive rescue efforts were still ongoing, with people feared trapped under the rubble.
“This is the result of yet another barrage of rockets targeting our civiilian populations,” Elsdunne said.
The police spokesperson declined to give an exact figure for the number of casualties in the town, but said that “scores” had been injured and that that number was growing as police work to locate more individuals.
Elsdunne added that the “civilian discipline” instilled in Israelis was helping to save many lives, with the authorities asking the public to follow multiple instructions for their own safety. “Obviously to stay close to protected shelter, to be in protected shelter until you get a notification to leave, but also not to share locations of impact sites,” he said.
“It’s very dangerous, the Iranian regime is obviously using this to continue their targeting of the civilian population,” he added.
“We ask them to continuously listen to these instructions.”

Some residents in Tehran have been fleeing Iran’s capital as a sense of panic takes hold amid the escalating conflict with Israel.
Many are heading towards the north, near the Caspian Sea, which is more rural and isolated. But residents told CNN that the roads are so gridlocked it is difficult to move.
One family, who didn’t want to be named, decided to leave Tehran with their two small children and their elderly parents. They are worried that the government has housed officials and military leaders within highly populated, upper middle-class neighborhoods – putting civilians at risk.
I don’t want to leave my home but I am not going to put my young children in this position,” the father said. “I hope that the US steps in to stop the attacks between both countries.”
In the city of Shiraz, long lines for petrol have been forming around the city. Residents are also stocking up on food, water, and diapers.
Cars full of families with suitcases and water strapped to the roof have been seen around the city with many families leaving for the countryside.
One family said they waited an one hour to get petrol so they could leave.

Over 200 rocket launches were reported overnight, the government added, with 22 impact sites identified.
Three people died in attacks the previous night.
This post has been corrected to reflect that 13 people have died in Israel since the conflict began and not just overnight, as previously reported.

Iran’s foreign minister says Tehran does not want the conflict with Israel to expand to a wider regional war “unless it’s imposed on us.”
Abbas Araghchi added that his country had been ready to continue nuclear negotiations with the US, but that Israel’s strikes on Friday had disrupted those talks and showed Israel’s “opposition to any form of negotiation.”
“It is absolutely clear that the Israeli regime does not want any agreement on the nuclear issue; it does not want negotiations, and it does not want diplomacy,” Araghchi said in a meeting with foreign ambassadors broadcast on state-run media. “The attack on Iran in the midst of nuclear talks clearly demonstrates the Israeli regime’s opposition to any form of negotiation.”
Araghchi said that Iran’s strikes on Israel have targeted both military and economic infrastructure and criticized Israel’s strikes on Iranian petrochemical refineries as risking a broader regional conflict.
We don’t want to expand this war to other countries or the region unless it’s imposed on us,” he said.
US President Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Sunday morning that the US “had nothing to do with the attack on Iran, tonight.” He then warned: “If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before.”
But Araghchi was skeptical. “From our perspective, (Israel’s) aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran could not have occurred without the agreement and support of the United States,” he said, claiming Iran had “solid evidence” of US support behind the strikes – though he did not say what the evidence was.

Israel issues evacuation warning to Iranians living near weapons production sites in Iran
From CNN’s Eugenia Yosef and Nadeen Ebrahim
The Israeli military has issued an “urgent” evacuation warning to Iranians living near weapons production facilities, a possible sign further strikes could be coming.
“For your safety, we ask you to please immediately evacuate the areas of these facilities and to not return until further notice,” Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Arabic spokesperson Avichay Adraee wrote in Farsi in a statement on X on Sunday. “Being in the vicinity of these areas endangers your life.”
He said the warning also extended to areas near “facilities that support weapons production in Iran.”
Israeli Minister of Defense Israel Katz confirmed the order, saying the IDF had begun issuing evacuation instructions to residents of Tehran living near to weapons manufacturing facilities.
“The IDF will strike the sites and will continue peeling off the Iranian snake’s skin in Tehran and elsewhere from (its) nuclear capabilities and weapons arrays,” Katz said in a statement. “The Iranian dictator is turning Tehran into Beirut and the residents of Tehran into hostages, for the sake of his regime’s survival.”
An Israeli security official said Katz’s evacuation order for residents in Tehran “is a part of a plan which was approved in advance, to apply pressure on the (Iranian) regime through the evacuation of the population – in response to the firing at the Israeli home front.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned in a video address on Saturday that Israel will “strike every site and every target of the Ayatollah’s regime.” Iran has threatened to intensify its attacks if Israel continues hostilities.

Flights and airspace still impacted in Israel and Iran, as Jordan reopens skies
From CNN’s Jessie Yeung
Israel’s airspace remains shut on Sunday, with the main international hub Ben Gurion Airport closed to both landings and departures, according to a spokesperson from the Israel Airports Authority.
The country’s airspace has been closed since it launched its initial strikes on Iran on Friday.
Iran also closed its airspace Friday, a closure which will continue through 3 p.m. local time Sunday, according to its Civil Aviation Organization. Passengers should avoid visiting the country’s airports in person, it said.
Jordan, which is between the two countries and temporarily closed its airspace on Friday as a precaution, reopened it in the early hours of Sunday morning, “following a reassessment of security and airspace risks,” according to the country’s Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission.

Names and photos of the four people killed by Iranian strikes in northern Israel overnight have been released, with a resident describing the terror of living without safe shelter.
The four people were killed in the Palestinian-Israeli town of Tamra after a strike hit a residential building, according to Israeli emergency responders. That brings the overnight death toll in Israel to 10, with six others killed in separate strikes in central Israel.
“The villages and cities in Palestinian territories inside Israel pay the price,” a Tamra resident told CNN.
These places “are without shelters … This means that rockets are launched and attempts are made to dismantle them over the heads of our people.”
Many Palestinian-Israeli towns in the country’s north “lack public shelters, protected areas, and shelter facilities in educational institutions,” according to the Association for Civil Rights in Israel.

Israeli strikes hit missile launch facilities in Iran, says IDF
From CNN’s Jessie Yeung and Eugenia Yosef
Israeli strikes on Iran hit surface-to-surface missile launchers and other military infrastructure, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement Sunday morning.
“Overnight, missile launchers were identified and struck in Iran. Over the past hour, the (Israeli Air Force) completed an additional series of strikes on storage and missile launch infrastructure sites in western Iran,” the statement said.
The Air Force released video of what it said were the strikes on the missile launchers, showing large explosions and clouds of billowing smoke afterward.
Earlier Israeli strikes also hit the headquarters of Iran’s Ministry of Defense in Tehran, as well as an oil depot and a fuel tank near the capital.
Iran has not yet released any information about casualties from Israel’s overnight strikes.
Some context: The IAF previously said it carried out a wave of strikes hitting defense arrays in Tehran, overnight into Saturday.
“We damaged – and will continue to damage – strategic sites and enemy sources of knowledge,” commanding officer of the Israeli Air Force MG Tomer Bar said at the time.
“For the first time since the beginning of the war, over 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) from Israeli territory, the IAF struck defense arrays in the area of Tehran.”

President Donald Trump said the US “had nothing to do with the attack on Iran, tonight” in a post to his social media platform Truth Social Sunday morning, issuing a warning to Tehran not to bring his country into the conflict.
“If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before,” Trump said.
“However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict,” Trump added.
This spring, Trump gave Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei 60 days to negotiate a nuclear deal, warning there would be consequences if they didn’t come to an agreement. At the time, Trump urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to hold off on attacking Iran, to give space for the negotiations.
After Israel began striking Iran on Friday, Trump told CNN: “I don’t know if you know but I gave them a 60-day warning and today is day 61.”

What we know about overnight strikes between Israel and Iran
From CNN's Jessie Yeung

It’s early Sunday morning in the Middle East. In Israel, emergency responders are conducting search and rescue operations and medical evacuations after Iran launched a wave of drone and missile strikes overnight.
Israel’s overnight strikes on Iran also hit a number of targets, including the country’s defense ministry headquarters. “Tehran is burning,” Israel’s defense minister posted on X late Saturday.
Here’s what we know so far.
Iran’s strikes: The death toll in Israel from overnight strikes into Sunday stands at eight so far. Those killed range in age from 10 to 80 years old. In the central Israeli city of Bat Yam, a building was directly hit, killing at least four people. Other buildings in the area were also damaged, with at least 140 injured across central Israel. Other strikes took place in northern Israel, including the Palestinian-Israeli town of Tamra where a residential building was hit, also killing four people.
Israel’s strikes: Israel also launched overnight strikes, hitting the Iranian Ministry of Defense headquarters in Tehran. The Israeli military said it also targeted other locations that “advanced” Iran’s nuclear program. Israeli strikes also hit an oil depot and a fuel tank near Tehran on Saturday, causing a large fire – but the situation is “under control,” according to Iran’s state media IRNA. There have been no reports on casualties from the overnight strikes so far, but Iran previously said at least 78 people had been killed by Israeli strikes in recent days.
Weeks-long operation: The Israeli operation against Iran is expected to take “weeks, not days” and is moving forward with the implicit approval of the United States, according to White House and Israeli officials. The administration of US President Donald Trump has not critiqued the weeks-long timeframe in private discussions, an Israeli official told CNN. A White House official said the administration was aware and implicitly supportive of Israel’s plans.
Netanyahu’s address: In a televised speech on Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country would continue its operation “for as many days as it takes” to eliminate Iran’s nuclear threat. The Israeli military claims it has destroyed Iran’s ballistic missile launch sites and stockpiles.
Iran’s response: Tehran, which insists its nuclear program is peaceful, says it has “no option but to respond.” Its elite military wing, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, threatened to intensify its attacks if Israel continued hostilities.

A 10-year-old boy was among the four people killed by an Iranian missile strike in central Israel, with more people still unaccounted for at the scene, according to emergency services.
A large emergency response operation is underway in Bat Yam city, where a building was directly hit.
A 60-year-old woman, an 80-year-old woman and a girl whose age was not given were also killed in the strike, according to Israel’s national emergency service Magen David Adom (MDA).
Videos from Bat Yam showed a building with its facade ripped from it, and tall piles of rubble. Emergency workers could be seen scouring the scene with search dogs, and residents gathered on the street behind a cordon line.
“We don’t have the exact number of people that are missing, but we do know that there’s a lot of people that haven’t contacted their loved ones yet, so now we’re focusing on looking for them,” said Bat Yam mayor Tzvika Brot, in video by the Reuters news agency.
Brot said the first building was hit around 2:30 a.m. Other buildings in the area were also damaged, with videos showing windows shattered and window frames torn from the outer walls.

Authorities are now setting up family centers and working to support residents displaced by the strikes, he said, urging the public not to go near the site.
Lt. Dean Elsdunne, the international spokesperson for Israel Police, said they received “reports of numerous impact sites” after “a large barrage of rockets” fired from Iran.
“We have a number of casualties that we had to medically evacuate, and unfortunately those include fatalities,” he said, speaking from Bat Yam, in Reuters video. He added that police are working with other Israeli agencies, including the military, to locate missing residents and secure the scene.
About 140 people have been wounded in two locations across central Israel.
In a separate wave of strikes, four additional people were killed in northern Israel, raising the death toll from attacks overnight into Sunday to eight.

Iran says it has used its new kind of ballistic missile in the latest strikes on Israel.
According to the state-affiliated FARS news agency, Israel was hit with the Haj Qassem guided ballistic missile during a wave of strikes overnight into Sunday.
Iranian Defense Minister Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh told Iranian TV on May 4 that the new missile would be able to get past defenses such as the US military’s Terminal High Altitude Defense (THAAD), which has been deployed to Israel, as well as Patriot missile defenses and others that Israel employs.
Iran unveiled the missile in early May, saying it is solid-fueled, has a range of 1,200 kilometers and is equipped with a maneuverable warhead that can penetrate missile-defense systems, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency.
“The new ballistic missile is also equipped with an advanced navigation system that allows it to hit targets precisely and counter electronic warfare,” Tasnim reported in early May.
The missile is named after Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds force, the special operations unit of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who was killed in a US attack in Iraq during President Donald Trump’s first term.
