Dear Reader, One of the first signs of an authoritarian regime is the politicization of law enforcement. It was an important component of Donald Trump’s first term in office, and it’s become a major campaign promise in his attempt to regain power. None of this should come as a surprise. Trump has a long and sordid history of bullying opponents, journalists, judges, and even ordinary citizens. But the alarming part is how eager his followers are to join in. There were assaults at campaign rallies in 2016, the insurrection on January 6, 2021, and threats against judges and politicians in 2023. His loyal supporters have invoked his name while committing hate crimes and attempting to kidnap and assassinate the governor of Michigan. Now House Republicans have said they’ll move to impeach Joe Biden, despite the lack of any evidence. Bogus investigations into rivals are yet another hallmark of the authoritarian mind. Even out of power, Trump is already using his enablers to transform government into a tool of political vengeance. The New Republic has been defending democracy for more than a century, and we’ve never seen a more dangerous time for our republic. That’s why we’re massively expanding our coverage of this high-stakes election. We are hiring new reporters and launching a new Election 2024 section to target Donald Trump and his Republican lackeys. But we can’t do it without your help. |
How dangerous is Donald Trump right now? The Washington Post reports that, in the three years since the January 6 attack on the Capitol, Republicans’ loyalty to him and the Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen has only grown. And Trump has vowed to pardon the January 6 insurrectionists, 22 percent of whom had criminal records even before attacking the U.S. Capitol, erecting a gallows, and chanting for members of Congress to surrender to their vigilante justice. We are doing our best to pull the fire alarm before America sleepwalks into dictatorship, as Liz Cheney put it recently. That’s why The New Republic is expanding its influential coverage to focus on the critical elections next year—but we need your help to make it happen. |
With the election less than a year away—and with Trump beating everyone, including President Biden, in many polls—it’s crucial to warn the American people of what Trump’s “day one” dictatorship would really look like: persecuting political enemies, reviving the separation of children from their families, bringing back internment camps, expanding abortion bans, kicking millions of Americans off health care—and appointing a tsunami of extremist judges to make his drastic changes last for decades. If everyone reading these words contributes just $25, we can raise the money we need to meet this moment and take down this dangerous demagogue. Please help us by donating today. |
