Good morning from Brussels,Following months of stalemate due to Hungary’s veto, EU leaders managed on Thursday to convince Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to greenlight a €50 billion aid package for Ukraine. A similar package has been stalled in Washington due to the opposition of US Republicans. EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen expressed her hope that the EU’s move would inspire the US to follow suit and “do their fair share”. Euractiv’s Alexandra Brzozowski analyses how the EU’s Ukraine aid deal was sealed and what it means for the next steps. For German MEP Daniel Freund, the lesson to be learnt from yesterday’s deal is that “Orbán only understands this language of power”. Meanwhile, Sweden’s NATO application – also blocked by Orbán – will be on the Hungarian parliament’s agenda next week, but no progress is expected. |

As EU leaders discussed Ukraine, Place du Luxembourg in Brussels was flooded with more than 1,000 tractors and thousands of farmers from across Europe (see photos and videos by Maria Simon Arboleas). The demonstrations resulted in farmers ‘gaining a seat’ at the EU leaders’ table. Meanwhile, EU Commissioners Stella Kyriakides and Jutta Urpilainen and several Swedish and Belgian ministers warned in an op-ed for Euractiv that the probability of extreme epidemics could increase threefold in the coming decades. German liberals have confirmed the Berlin government would abstain – which de facto works as a ‘no’ vote - in voting on the EU’s proposal for a corporate due diligence law that would see companies becoming liable for human rights breaches in their supply chains, with the majority now likely hinging on Italy, reports Jonathan Packroff. |
