Greek Patriot Battery Intercepts Two Iranian Ballistic Missiles Over Saudi Arabia
The Greek Ministry of Defense confirmed on Thursday that the Greek Patriot anti-aircraft system deployed in Saudi Arabia successfully intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles.
“This morning, the Greek Patriot battery intercepted two missiles launched from Iran targeting refineries within the Kingdom,” Defense Minister Nikos Dendias stated. He emphasized that the mission’s success serves a dual purpose: proving the combat readiness of Greek forces and protecting the European economy.
“The constant rise in oil prices is a massive threat to the living standards of Greeks, Europeans, and the entire planet,” Dendias added. “By protecting refineries and oil production units, our forces are indirectly but clearly defending the livelihoods of our citizens against the threat of global inflation.”
The Hellenic Force of Saudi Arabia (ELDYSA) was placed on high alert following a detected threat. Two interceptor missiles were launched to neutralize the incoming targets, which were reportedly aiming for critical energy infrastructure.
Greek Patriot system part of international force in Saudi Arabia
The engagement occurred as part of Greece’s participation in the international “Integrated Air Missile Defense (IAMD) Concept” initiative.
The Saudi Ministry of Defense noted that the primary target was the port city of Yanbu, home to the major Saudi Aramco–Exxon refinery. Yanbu serves as a critical terminal for the Red Sea pipeline, Saudi Arabia’s primary alternative for oil exports should the Strait of Hormuz be closed. While Iranian strikes targeted these facilities, sources revealed to Reuters that operational impact was minimal thanks to the successful interceptions.
Greece announced in 2020 that it would send a Patriot defense missile system to Saudi Arabia under a program involving the United States, Great Britain, and France. Athens deployed the missiles, which the Saudis paid for, “to protect critical energy infrastructure,” a Greek government spokesman said at the time.
