Greece as an asset in the new US National Security Strategy

[InTime News]

As the US is changing its approach to the world, and altering many long-standing views and policies, including its defense posture with respect to Europe, Greece sees itself as a net contributor to the emerging security arrangement.

As it navigates the new complex geopolitical reality, Athens finds itself in Washington’s view as more than merely another European nation.

Its geographic location, at the crossroads of three continents, has obviously its own significance.

But it’s much more than that, including first and foremost the strategic cooperation with Israel, adopted and steadily implemented by many and ideologically diverse Greek governments, which has led to a number of bilateral agreements, already signed or in the works, expected to reach almost $ 4 billion.

With this unfolding background, the Greek Prime Minister is meeting on December 22nd in Jerusalem with his Israeli counterpart and attending a trilateral summit along with the President of Cyprus.

At the same time, Athens is steadily deepening its traditional ties with major Arab countries, including Egypt, the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

About 100 Hellenic Air Force personnel are stationed in the Kingdom operating a US Patriot missile battery.

Greece remains a dedicated EU member with an influential voice in the Union’s affairs – as confirmed by the recent election of Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis as the head of Eurogroup, essentially the EU’s economic policy body – while at the same time nurturing its special relationship with the US, not only on the security front, but also on the society level as the Greek American community remains a strong presence in America’s social, economic and political fabric.

Athens, which has made clear its intention to actively participate in the “day after” initiatives with respect to reconstruction and humanitarian aid in both Ukraine and the Middle East, is steadily projecting its own significant role in the Eastern Mediterranean and the broader Middle East and North Africa. In this context, it is positioning itself as a natural strategic asset within the newly articulated US National Security Strategy.
