Dear Onder,
Yesterday, I testified before a Republican-controlled House committee—a hearing that seemed designed to pressure universities into surrendering to Donald Trump’s sweeping attempts to control higher education, from research agendas to admissions, hiring, and even what gets taught.
That’s not how we do things in America.
It’s always a risk to appear before hostile members as the sole witness opposing their narrative. But Ibelieve it’s important to stand up to authoritarianism, to hold policymakers accountable for their actions, and to push for the structural changes that we need to build a more just economy and stronger democracy.
The Trump administration’s power grab at elite colleges is a dangerous departure from our laws and democratic values, but it’s only half the story of the President’s agenda to reshape higher education.
The Trump administration and Republicans in Congress are attempting to cut Pell Grants for nearly 5 million Americans. They’re rolling out the red carpet for predatory for-profit colleges to siphon off taxpayer dollars and leave students in deep debt. That’s unconscionable.
Defending against these assaults is not enough. We need to chart a course that will bring real, structural change to higher education funding and provide affordable, accessible education and training for everyone.
In the hearing, I proposed a bold idea: using the federal government’s position to negotiate down the price of college, just like the Medicare market. That concept could make college free for many Americans and far more affordable for millions more.
In the coming months, my team and I will roll out plans to use every tool at the government’s disposal to make it easier and cheaper for every American to get the education and training they need for the job they want.
The Trump administration is trying to break our trust in government by slashing the programs that help most Americans and turning even more power over to wealthy individuals and big corporations. We can’t let them. Join us in the fight today.
