| | Miliband to hand taxpayer billions to wood-burning power stations | The Energy Secretary is understood to be set to offer support to Drax and other biomass operators, with a decision due as early as Monday. However, environmentalists are likely to see continued support for biomass fuel as a betrayal of Labour’s promises to focus on clean energy.
Mr Miliband is a key advocate of net zero within the Government but is still expected to back wood-burning as a major source of energy, amid fears Britain may be unable to keep the lights on without sites including North Yorkshire-based Drax, the UK’s largest power plant. | | Drax, which has a biomass plant in Selby, has been accused of chopping down forests to generate power | It comes after the Energy Secretary backtracked on his climate pledges earlier today after dropping his opposition to a third runway at Heathrow. Previously, he had threatened to resign over expansion of the airport in 2009 and voted against the plan in 2018. But this morning he said “I do support what the Government is doing” and that he would “abide by collective responsibility” on the issue. Read his comments in full here. |
